Assistant Dean for Scholarly Communications and Collection Development

This highly visible senior administrative position is one of three assistant deans and reports to the Dean of Libraries/Vice President for Information Technology. The Assistant Dean for Scholarly Communications and Collection Development provides dynamic and visionary leadership, management, planning, policy development, and strategic direction of all aspects for the library-wide scholarly communication activities, including the college liaison program, archives and special collections, and collection development. The Assistant Dean is a member of the Libraries’ executive leadership group and represents the Dean of Libraries as appropriate.  This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead the development and management of library collections and instruction and outreach services within the rapidly evolving environment of higher education.

Primary responsibilities include:
  • Oversees the College Liaisons, Collections, and Archives and Special Collections departments (13 faculty librarians and archivists, 5 staff) and works with the coordinators of these units to develop and carry out strategic initiatives; manages an annual collections budget exceeding $6 million and a collection of more than 2 million volumes.  Negotiates contracts with vendors and consortia on behalf of the Libraries.
  • Leads a team of faculty and staff in designing work processes and services in support of learning, teaching, research, and collections. Implements innovative instruction and outreach models for a diverse and growing undergraduate population in eight academic colleges.
  • Cultivates and promotes new and progressive models of scholarly communication and collection development, including open access, demand-driven acquisitions, data management, and an increased focus on building primary source collections in physical and digital formats.
  • Initiates library-wide discussion on scholarly communication, collection assessment, and outreach liaison activities. Represents the Libraries in campus-wide planning for scholarly communications initiatives, and in local, regional, and national arenas as appropriate.
  • Promotes alternative publishing models and consults on author’s rights. Provides support to librarians engaged in activities related to scholarly communication, open access, and copyright.
  • Maintains currency on emerging library and scholarly information trends and practices.
  • Oversees the production of select statistical and other reports for the Libraries, the university administration, and external organizations as appropriate, including those focused on annual collections expenditures and instruction and outreach activities.
  • Serves on the Libraries’ executive leadership group together with the Assistant Dean of Digital Library and ePublishing Services, the Assistant Dean for Resource Delivery Services, the Dean of Libraries/Vice President for Information Technology, and the Director of Academic Computing and Network Services.
  • Works closely with the Libraries’ executive leadership group and others in the Libraries to assess and enhance service quality, including development of metrics and analysis of data.
  • Participates in library fundraising and donor activities in collaboration with Library Development, the Dean of Libraries, and Archives and Special Collections; works with these units and the Dean to identify potential collection donors, solicit and acquire collections, and develop and use private funds for collections.


Required: MLS or equivalent from an ALA accredited program is required with a minimum of five years of experience in administering a major unit within a research library and a strong record of scholarship and service. The successful candidate will have substantial library experience in progressively more responsible positions; experience and knowledge of collections and services that support learning, teaching, and research; knowledge of scholarly communication issues; demonstrated leadership to effect change in a challenging, complex, and evolving information environment; effective supervisory and team building experience; ability to work well with a diverse employee and user community; ability to work in a rapidly changing environment in collaboration with university IT staff; successful experience in working in a collaborative and collegial research library environment; strong analytical and decision making skills; knowledge of the application of information technology; superior interpersonal skills; and experience in effective planning and budgeting.

Preferred: Experience with consortial collaborations, grant writing, and cultivating donor relationships; experience providing services to faculty and graduate students.


Faculty status and responsibilities. The successful candidate must have a significant record of scholarly accomplishments and relevant professional service for the minimum appointment of tenured associate professor.  Rank is dependent upon qualifications. Insurance benefits are available for appointments of half-time or greater, and faculty and administrative professionals may select from several options for medical, dental, life, and personal disability insurance, as well as retirement plans.  Full-time faculty and administrative professionals earn 24 days of vacation and 15 days of sick leave annually.  Optional deferred compensation.  Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Mexican Materials Bibliographer

The University of Texas at Austin Libraries invites applicants for the position of Mexican Materials Bibliographer. The Mexican Materials Bibliographer will administer the Nettie Lee Benson Collection’s renowned Mexican materials, selecting information sources in all formats, with particular attention to e-resources, provide instruction and serve as a liaison to the University’s Mexicanist scholars. Required Qualifications:  Minimum of an American Library Association Master's degree in Library and Information Sciences or a social sciences or humanities discipline with specialization in or extensive knowledge of the history and culture of Mexico. Ability to read, write and speak Spanish. Ability to work in a collaborative environment with faculty, staff, students, and researchers. Available for international travel. At least 3 years professional experience working in a university, library or archive. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:  Ph.D. preferred. Three or more years working in a university setting, preferably in a research library. Knowledge of colonial U.S. Southwest. Demonstrated ability to manage a collection budget. Proficiency in the use of bibliographic tools and resources. Experience with digital collection development and working with faculty and students to facilitate the use of digital tools and resources. Demonstrated ability to establish and meet goals. Professional initiative. Ability to multitask. Experience providing public service to research library patrons. A record of research and scholarly excellence. Databases/Serials Librarian

Executive Director

The Boston Library Consortium, an association of 17 academic and research libraries located in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire, is dedicated to sharing human and information resources to advance the research and learning of its constituency. Founded in 1970, the Consortium supports and explores resource sharing and enhancement of services to users through programs in cooperative collecting, access to electronic resources and physical collections, and enhanced interlibrary loan and document delivery. Three Research Librarians With Subject And/Or Instructional Design Expertise

The University of California, Irvine Libraries seeks creative, flexible, and innovative librarians to join an enthusiastic staff in building a research library of excellence for a young and rapidly growing university ranked nationally among the top universities. Three research librarians will be appointed who will specialize in one or more subject areas and will perform a combination of collection development, reference, and instructional duties.  One of the research librarians will have special responsibility for instructional design and play a lead role in online education efforts. 

The exact combination of duties and the specific subjects to be assigned are flexible and will be influenced largely by the profiles of the most qualified applicants.  Subject areas that are needed include:  English, Comparative Literature, Critical Theory, Classics, German, Music, Drama, Dance, Latin American Studies, Logic and Philosophy of Science, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics & Astronomy, Religious Studies, and Romance Languages (Spanish and Portuguese, French, Italian).

The Research Librarian specializing in instructional design and online education will be a member of the Education and Outreach Department.  The other Research Librarians will be members of either the Collection Development Department or the Reference Department depending on the subjects assigned and which types of duties predominate. 


All research librarian positions

In the area of collection development, Research Librarians are responsible for the selection, assessment, and management of collections and resources in their subject areas.  They serve as liaisons to the faculty and students in their subject areas to ensure that their information needs are being met as well as to promote the Libraries’ services and resources.  They monitor budgets and make collections decisions that support the teaching and research needs on campus.  They develop and update subject webpages in support of research in their assigned subjects.  They help promote scholarly communication initiatives and digital scholarship services that support the research life cycle.

In the area of reference, Research Librarians provide specialized reference and research consultations in their subject areas, and they also maintain sufficient knowledge to provide effective general reference service at the reference desk including responding to in-person, telephone, and electronic inquiries. 

In the area of instruction, Research Librarians provide and promote specialized instruction services to students and faculty in their subject areas.  They also participate in the Libraries’ instruction program for students enrolled in lower-division writing courses and other information literacy initiatives.

Additional responsibilities of the research librarian specializing in instructional design and online education

In addition to the above responsibilities, the Research Librarian specializing in instructional design and online education will provide leadership in the development, implementation, and assessment of online learning tools, resources, and services for the UC Irvine Libraries.  This Research Librarian will monitor the development of online courses at UC Irvine and will actively pursue opportunities to integrate information literacy instruction into those courses. The incumbent will collaborate with library and campus staff and faculty on the design and development of online learning materials (tutorials, point of need demonstrations, how-to videos, etc.) that support instruction in information literacy skills and in the use of library resources and services.


Required (all positions):

  • Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent combination of relevant advanced degree and library experience.
  • Educational background in the subject areas to be assigned or experience performing reference, instruction and/or collection development for the subjects.

  • Familiarity with concepts and goals of information literacy.
  • Understanding of instructional design principles in an online environment.
  • Familiarity with copyright and fair use principles as they relate to online and distance learning.
  • Knowledge of technologies that facilitate learning in an online environment.
  • Experience creating instructional and information materials such as online tutorials, surveys, and guides.
  • Ability to manage complex projects.
  • Ability to learn new technology tools and skills, to conduct training for users and staff, and strong desire to share this knowledge with others.

Preferred (all positions):

  • Experience assessing, evaluating, and negotiating digital resources in the subject areas.
  • Skill in developing, organizing, and maintaining web-based information resources.
  • Interest in Digital Humanities and/or eScience.

The Education and Outreach Department

The Education and Outreach Department, which currently includes 2 librarians and a .25 library assistant, provides leadership for the Libraries’ outreach and instruction activities and programs which emphasize research skills, information literacy, scholarly communication, and critical thinking. The Department has a lead role in the coordination, integration, and assessment of all library instruction and outreach activities, including subject-based, graduate, and professional school instruction. The Department operates in a collaborative, team-based environment and works closely with members of the Libraries’ Reference and Collection Development Departments in order to fulfill its mission.

The Reference Department

The Reference Department consists of Langson Library Reference and Ayala Science Library Reference. Langson Library’s services and collections support research and teaching in the arts, education, humanities, social sciences and business and management. Ayala Science Library’s services and collections support research and teaching in biological and physical sciences, engineering and computer science, and the health sciences including medicine.  The Reference Department provides reference services including research consultations and virtual reference. Part of the Department’s mission is to provide expertise in research tools and information access to develop information literacy and critical thinking skills in a diverse interdisciplinary educational environment. The Reference Department operates in a team-based environment and the staff consists of 7-8 librarians and 8 FTE career staff.

The Collection Development Department

The Collection Development Department consists of 7-8 librarians and 1 FTE library assistant.  The Collection Development Department is committed to developing, delivering, and preserving the Libraries’ collection of significant and diverse research resources.  This department is dedicated to building a research library of excellence by overseeing and directing collection development activities, managing library collections, and fostering relationships with faculty, students and staff engaged in the production of knowledge.

Librarians are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, thirteen paid holidays, and one day per month sick leave.  The University has an excellent retirement system and offers a variety of group health, life, and disability insurance plans.  Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary.

Executive Director

Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) provide information services to & programming for children & adults from 22 library facilities. This is professional library administrative work having full accountability for management of a library branch in MCPL.  Employee will serve as a branch manager overseeing the provision of direct service & assistance to library customers.  Duties include:  assessing human resources & customer needs, planning goals & objectives for the branch, overseeing the supervision & performance  evaluations of branch staff, coordinating collection development activities, & establishing, maintaining, & improving communications & working relationships with diverse community groups, advisory committees, & the news media using a variety of social and traditional media methods.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Master's degree in library science or library information science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association plus four  years of progressively responsible professional experience in a field related to the assigned area. Digital Archivist

The Special Collections of Washington University Libraries in St. Louis is seeking a collaborative, flexible, and detail and service-oriented individual to serve as Digital Archivist in University Archives. University Archives is comprised of more than 300 unique collections. Chronicling the history of Washington University from 1853 to today, and containing numerous collections related to St. Louis history, University Archives is a wealth of primary sources and other historical materials that include manuscripts, photographic prints and negatives, books, film, sound recordings, microfilm, architectural plans, and artifacts.  The Special Collections Department is made up of five units (Film and Media Archive, Manuscripts, Modern Graphic History Library, Rare Books, and University Archives). Responsibilities: The Digital Archivist will assume management responsibilities in the area of archival processing of material regardless of format, including oversight and participation in the arrangement, description, and preparation of finding aids. The Archivist will lead the archives’ digital initiatives and develop strategies for the management of digital assets; responsibilities include digitization, creation of metadata, and providing access as well as working with other library and university staff on long-term preservation and maintenance of digital materials. This position will provide some references services and assistance with archive outreach activities.

Education qualifications: Master’s degree, preferably in history or social sciences, or MLS required. Academy of Certified Archivist certification preferred.

Experience: Previous archival education/experience required. Knowledge of archival standards, theory, and practice required. Experience with archival processing required. Knowledge of creation and preservation of digital assets required. Familiarity with XML and current and emerging cataloging and metadata standards is preferred (EAD, MODS). Evidence of written and oral communication skills required.
