Editorial Director

The Publishing Department of the American Library Association seeks an Editorial Director for its Products and Promotions unit, which is a business entity that publishes books, e-books, online learning webinars and courses, databases, and promotional materials that support libraries, literacy and reading.

The Director manages a staff of seven (five acquisition editors and two project coordinators) and an operating budget of five million dollars. This position reports to the Associate Executive Director and Head of the Publishing Department.

The Editorial Director develops and implements the acquisition strategy for 50 to 70 frontlist titles, that generate $2.5 million dollars in first year revenue, and creates and plans a long-term strategy to maintain a competitive position in the marketplace while ensuring ongoing fiscal responsibility. This includes new product development, re-envisioning existing products, and the forging of new partnerships to maximize revenue generation for new and existing revenue streams. The position also maintains coordination with marketing to generate key messages for sales collateral.

Requirements: Minimum of 10 years experience in acquisitions and acquisitions management, preferably in the professional and reference book sector. Evidence of high payoff acquisitions and the ability to recognize and capitalize on market trends. Ability to foster a team environment, build relationships and work collaboratively with staff, publishers, members, media and vendors. Demonstrated knowledge of business models and technology. Relevant bachelor’s degree (liberal arts, business, journalism).

Salary: Negotiable from $80,000, based on experience.
