Reference and Instruction Librarian

Xavier University of Louisiana, a historically Black and Catholic University, seeks an enthusiastic professional for the position of Reference and Instruction Librarian. This is a 12-month non-tenure-track faculty position. This individual will be responsible for providing reference services and innovative library instruction and information literacy programs in support of a Learning Commons next-generation environment. A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution is required as well as a strong commitment to public service, information literacy and distance education library services; effective oral and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; and a commitment to working in a diverse environment. Experience in instruction and/or professional experience in an academic library reference department are preferred.

As a member of the Reference team, the successful candidate will provide reference and instruction services using print and electronic sources. Service includes traditional reference desk service to patrons within the library as well as remote reference service via telephone, e-mail, SMS, and digital reference software. Instruction service includes tours, general and subject-specific bibliographic instruction sessions.


Additional responsibilities include assisting in the development of electronic instructional materials and LibGuides; assisting in reference and general collection development; serving as liaison to academic departments; serving on Library and University committees; supervising student workers; and participating in professional development activities leading to promotion.
