Individuals hired will find a collaborative environment for, and a renewed focus on, outreach and engagement with faculty, students, and other constituents to create communities of interest in digital scholarship, research innovation, and teaching and learning. This cohort within the Libraries will support the University’s strategic focus on three Discovery Themes, which calls for the hiring of new cohorts of faculty contributing to the interdisciplinary themes of Health and Wellness, Energy and Environment, and Food Production and Security; in supporting exemplary teaching and learning practices through the Digital First initiative, employing mobile and other technologies to create new learning opportunities and environments; and in general, supporting the processes of scholarship more deeply by using a variety of digital tools, resources, and techniques appropriate both for specific disciplines as well as for interdisciplinary projects.

Head, Fine Arts Library

In an academic environment where the arts are increasingly dynamic, evolving and relevant, the Head of the Fine Arts Library leads efforts to connect the Libraries’ art and design collections and research services to a multifaceted faculty, student body and community.  The Head will oversee the Fine Arts Library, develop its collections and promote engagement with the arts and design disciplines at the University, and specifically support digital scholarship in art and design in collaboration with other units and visual arts leaders in the campus community and in the Columbus area.   The Head will engage deeply with University efforts to strengthen the Arts District, including the Wexner Center for the Arts, Hopkins Hall Gallery, ACCAD (Advanced Computer Center for the Arts and Design), and the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum and its strategy to grow support of the  visual  and  performing  arts  through  its  Arts  Initiative.    The  Head  will  also  identify  opportunities  for  deeper  library engagement with both digital and traditional fine arts scholarship, exhibitions, and projects, and will be the Libraries’ leader in creating a wide-ranging support agenda for digital and fine arts research and scholarship across the University.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead the Fine Arts Library and ensure effective engagement of its programs, collections, and services with arts and design disciplines.
  • Serve as liaison to the Departments of Art, History of Art, Arts Education, the Design program, the Barnett Center for
  • Integrated Arts and Enterprise, and ACCAD (Advanced Computer Center for the Arts and Design).
  • Serve as expert consultant to students, faculty, and colleagues in the Libraries on arts-related topics and on emerging digital tools and methodologies for supporting arts scholars, in collaboration with the Head of Digital Initiatives.
  • Develop and implement a plan for engagement with digital arts scholarship and practice that complements engagement with more traditional scholarly activities.
  • Develop resources to support new initiatives focused on the digital arts.
  • Collaborate with leaders in the digital and traditional fine arts across the University in advancing the arts agenda of the University.
  • Increase awareness in the arts disciplines of issues pertaining to scholarly communication, copyright, and authors’ rights, in collaboration with the Head of Copyright Resources.
  • Partner with special collections curators in integrating the use of physical and digitized primary source materials into the arts curriculum and research portfolios of faculty.
  • Develop and deliver instruction in the visual arts and design disciplines.
  • Develop collections in the history of art, visual arts, design, and related disciplines.
Required Qualifications:
  • An ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree.
  • Advanced training in an arts field (undergraduate or graduate degree).
  • Familiarity with digital and traditional research methods and scholarship in the visual arts.
  • Knowledge of collection development practices and information resources for art history, art theory, art techniques, and design
  • Experience providing reference services and instructional sessions for arts-related resources.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, subject librarians, special collections and others in order to advance digital arts research and promote integration of digital arts approaches to enrich the curriculum and student research.
  • Demonstrated experience with processes, tools, and techniques in the digital arts (image discovery, image analysis, digital media platforms).
  • Previous experience in an academic library or an organization serving a visual arts community.
  • Reading knowledge of French, German, or Italian.

Head, Knowlton School of Architecture Library

The Ohio State University Libraries seek a dynamic, innovative, and forward-looking librarian to lead the Architecture Library at OSU’s Knowlton School of Architecture (KSA).  An integral part of the Knowlton School, the KSA Library is well-positioned to advance even closer collaboration with, and service to, faculty and students in the School with its programs in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and City and Regional Planning.  The Head of the KSA Library will develop and implement a vision for digital and as well as print collections that serve the unique research needs of faculty and students in architecture and related disciplines and be a teacher and collaborator in traditional as well as online courses.  The Head will also participate in ongoing development of the KSA Digital Library through partnership with the School’s Digital Resources Curator, and the Libraries’ Head of Digital Initiatives.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead the KSA Library and ensure effective engagement of its programs, collections, and services with the design disciplines.
  • Serve as liaison to the Knowlton School and its programs in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and City and Regional Planning.
  • Serve as expert consultant to faculty and students in the School on architectural information in all formats—architectural drawings, monographs, periodicals, images, and CAD drawings and equivalents.
  • Develop information literacy classes for KSA courses.
  • Develop collections in all formats appropriate for architecture and related design disciplines and manage collections funds.
  • Identify materials for possible digitization for both OSUL Digital Initiatives and the KSA Digital Library.
  • Prepare exhibitions using architectural collections, working with the Libraries’ Exhibits Subcommittee or other appropriate local groups.
  • Increase awareness within the School of scholarly communication, copyright, and authors’ rights issues, in collaboration with the Head of Copyright Resources.
  • Participate in community initiatives focused on documenting architectural landmarks.
Required Qualifications:

• An ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree.

• Experience in a library serving a design discipline.

• Knowledge of collection development practices and information resources, both print and digital, of particular use in the design disciplines.

Business Librarian

The Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University is an international leader in business education and leads the University in furthering commercialization as an institutional objective — turning research discoveries and ideas into business innovation. The Business Librarian advances the innovation, globalization and strategic leadership inherent in the teaching, learning and research mission of the College and related units of the University.  The librarian will build strong partnerships and deepen engagement with the world class and renowned faculty of the College; will assist faculty and students in developing research capabilities, focusing on data, business intelligence, and appropriate software and tools as part of a suite of consulting services; and will provide support for course development.  The librarian will be a critical partner for the dynamic programs of the College of Business and lead the Libraries’ engagement and collection building in these areas to advance discovery and learning in an international, information-rich environment.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the liaison to the Fisher College of Business (serving the academic departments of Accounting & MIS, Finance, Management Sciences, Management & Human Resources, and Marketing & Logistics) and Department of Economics.
  • Work closely with faculty, students and other scholars to provide proactive business research support and innovative instruction.
  • Build partnerships, using both innovative and traditional methods, and create shared practices that connect the Libraries’ learning environment and research knowledge with constituent needs.
  • Develop collections in all formats for the research and teaching needs of constituents in the College.
  • Broaden access to collections through digital project initiatives and actively acquire and promote both licensed and freely available digital resources of value to researchers.
  • Increase awareness within the College of scholarly communication, copyright, and authors’ rights issues, in collaboration with Head of Copyright Resources.
  • Actively develop regional, national and international partnerships and collaborations to advance the strategic directions of the Libraries in support of the Fisher College of Business.
Required Qualifications:
  • An ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree.
  • Demonstrated experience in working effectively with business or economics faculty and students, or with corporate staff, about their research and information needs.
  • Experience with collection development in business or economics in the specialized and emerging formats, such as small data sets, required by those disciplines.
  • Experience in delivering innovative instruction and research support services for business-related resources.
  • Public service experience in an academic or corporate library or comparable setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in business.

Geospatial Information Librarian

The Geospatial Information Librarian is a forward-focused individual who will establish and grow the Libraries’ GIS services program.  This librarian will be an expert in applying geospatial concepts and techniques to the research agendas of faculty and students, will manage the Geology Library, maintaining strong relationships with faculty and students in the School of Earth Sciences, and will enhance curricula and research innovation across the University relating to spatial and visual thinking. The librarian will design and deliver consulting services to faculty and students using spatial data in a wide range of units across the University, and will collaborate with units already providing GIS consulting.  In addition, the librarian will work closely with Data Management Services Librarian, the Digital Humanities Librarian, the Head of Digital Initiatives, and others to increase understanding of geospatial and data issues pertaining to research and teaching throughout the Libraries and on campus at large.  The librarian will be responsible for acquiring, developing, and curating geospatial data collections and for leveraging research software and technology resources to enhance course development and research innovation.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop a robust GIS Program based on analysis of constituent needs throughout the University.
  • Market and promote the GIS Program in context of other value-added services provided by the Libraries.
  • Support data visualization activities by promoting techniques associated with specialized, evolving data visualization tools for spatial applications.
  • Lead and supervise the Geology Library staff and ensure the Library’s effectiveness in operations, service, and outreach.
  • Serve as liaison to the School of Earth Sciences and the Department of Geography.
  • Develop collections in geology and geoscience disciplines and provide discipline-specific instruction.
  • Oversee the maps collections of the OSU Libraries in all formats and in all locations.
  • Engage with other campus units with geospatial and statistical services such as the Center for Mapping and the Center for Urban and Regional Analysis.
  • Collaborate with the Undergraduate Research Office, the Honors and Scholars Program, the CSTW (Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing), in order to promote the GIS Program for student research projects.
  • Work closely with Data Management Services Librarian, the Digital Humanities Librarian, the Head of Digital Initiatives, and others to  increase understanding of  geospatial and data  issues  pertaining to  research and teaching throughout  the Libraries and on campus at large.
  • Build on OSUL’s strength in instruction and classroom engagement to promote curricular enhancements focused on spatial and visual thinking across the University.
  • Represent the Libraries at consortial and other meetings concerning geospatial data issues.
Required Qualifications:
  • An ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree.
  • A degree in a science discipline.
  • Experience with GIS software and its applications in research and teaching.
  • Knowledge of the organization of information and of scholarship in the geoscience disciplines.

Digital Humanities Librarian

The Digital Humanities Librarian will establish and grow a dynamic, multifaceted program that addresses the growing demand for digital arts and humanities support on campus.  Working with arts and humanities scholars, faculty and students, the Digital Humanities Librarian will foster successful adoption and application of digital arts and humanities approaches to research, teaching, and learning. The librarian will engage deeply with the Digital Arts and Humanities Working Group, the Digital Media Collective, ACCAD (Advanced Computer Center for the Arts and Design), and other campus entities to identify innovative and evolving digital tools and resources that advance scholarly investigation, while building upon the traditional cornerstones of research methodologies in the arts and humanities disciplines.  The librarian will be the liaison to the University’s Humanities Institute and will collaborate with faculty participating in Institute projects and initiatives funded by the College of Arts and Sciences, and will collaborate with the Head of Digital Initiatives in the Libraries on projects originating in the Institute.   The Digital Humanities Librarian will be a change agent, partner, and resource person for subject librarians and special collections curators involved in facilitating faculty and student digital projects and will be expected to conduct regular environmental scans of the campus environment to identify emerging areas of interest.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct environmental scans of humanities departments in conjunction with subject librarians and special collections curators in order to identify current and emerging scholarly projects for which digital tools and methodologies are appropriate.
  • Coordinate information about digital arts and humanities scholarship on campus in order to connect scholars across the disciplines and facilitate interdisciplinarity.
  • Identify  and  evaluate  current  and  emerging  digital  tools  and  methodologies  supporting  humanities  scholars  in collaboration with Digital Initiatives.
  • Provide expert consulting service to humanities scholars and students on techniques and tools that serve to advance their teaching, learning and research.
  • Serve as a strategist and resource person for the Libraries on trends in the digital arts and humanities.
  • Collaborate with staff managing the Libraries’ digital repository, publishing and reformatting programs, to advance the Libraries’ contributions to faculty and student research projects in the arts and humanities; work with the Head of Digital Initiatives to create strategies for collaboration, program planning, and support for interdisciplinary digital projects.
  • Work closely with the Head of the Fine Arts Library, the Data Management Services Librarian, the Geospatial Information Librarian, and the Head of Digital Initiatives, and others in order to develop strategies focused on scholars’ digital production and curation needs.
  • Create an education program for Libraries’ staff focused on digital arts and humanities topics.
  • Act as subject librarian for a humanities discipline.


Required Qualifications:

  • An ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree.
  • Experience with digital arts and humanities research tools and approaches (e.g., text mining, data visualization, image analysis, and augmented reality).
  • Knowledge of data issues in the research/knowledge creation lifecycle.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, subject librarians, special collections and others in order to advance digital arts and humanities research.

Data Management Services Librarian

The Data Management Services Librarian will lead the Libraries’ initiatives to assist faculty and students in managing the lifecycle of data resulting from research projects of all types, and develop a data services program to support use, curation and reuse of data.  The position will catalyze progress in data management by engaging with the research practices of faculty and students and through positioning services and expertise at appropriate points in the research process. The successful candidate for this position will engage the campus in broader conversations around e-science and e-scholarship and will forge new collaborations and relationships that extend the Libraries’ capacity to support the University’s interdisciplinary initiatives.  The librarian selected will collaborate with the Geospatial Information Librarian, the Digital Humanities Librarian, the Head of Digital Content Services, and Head of Digital Initiatives in order to develop an integrated set of data services supporting individual researchers and scholars as well as departmental or cross-institutional research teams. The position will initially focus on social sciences and humanities research data.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead  development of  a  data  management services program  to  serve  the  needs of  faculty  and  students  across  the University, but with initial focus on the social sciences and humanities.
  • Investigate the current practices of researchers relating to data creation, use, and preservation.
  • Provide consultation services for faculty and students on data-related issues and challenges arising from their research.
  • Collaborate with Office of Research and appropriate administrators within the Colleges to increase faculty awareness of funder requirements for data management plans.
  • Provide consultation services for faculty and students on data-related issues and challenges arising from their research.
  • Collaborate with  the  Geospatial  Information Librarian,  the  Digital  Humanities  Librarian,  the  Head  of  Digital  Content Services, and Head of Digital Initiatives in order to develop an integrated set of data services supporting individual researchers and scholars as well as departmental or cross-institutional research teams.
  • Plan and conduct professional development opportunities for subject librarians, Area Studies librarians and archivists on data management issues specific to their assigned departments.
  • Represent the Libraries at consortial and other meetings concerning data curation and management issues.
Required Qualifications:
  • An ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree.
  • Understanding of the research processes used in a range of disciplines, especially in the humanities and social sciences, with particular focus on the research lifecycle of data.
  • Demonstrated experience with data management and curation, with particular focus on research practices relating to data, format migration, preservation, reuse and retrieval.
  • Familiarity with data management requirements of federal agencies.


Desired Qualifications:
  • A second advanced degree (M.A. or higher).
  • Demonstrated initiative in working across organizational boundaries.
  • Knowledge of national and international trends in data management and curation.

Rank/Salary:

All positions are full-time, permanent, 12-month tenure-track faculty appointments. Salary and faculty rank are dependent on qualifications and experience.
