Metadata Librarian for Special Collections


The J. Murrey Atkins Library at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking a creative, collaborative, and user-oriented professional committed to revealing archival collections using technology. The successful candidate will represent J. Murrey Atkins Library in the Special Collections Department overseeing and participating in cataloging and metadata functions for rare and unique materials in multiple formats, including establishing and documenting practices for digital collections metadata.

The Special Collections Department at Atkins Library has three sections: the Special Collections Section, the Digital Programs and Collections Section and the Digital Scholarship Lab Section.  This department collects, preserves, curates, creates and disseminates archival and digital content for research; and supports the Library and University mission of advancing intellectual discovery by connecting people with knowledge.

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a rapidly growing research intensive University offering over 25,000 students a variety of undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs in seven academic colleges. UNC Charlotte’s Atkins Library is a comprehensive research library with over 42,000 serial titles and an annual budget of over $10 million.

UNC Charlotte is located in the largest city in North Carolina, a beautiful southern city of 600,000 with over 1.5 million in the greater metropolitan area, and the second largest banking center in the nation in one of the fastest growing regions in the country.  Located on a 1,000 acre wooded campus, the University is accessible to the city's performing arts and cultural and sports events and to recreational lakes.

REQUIRED:
  •  Master’s degree from a school accredited by the American Library Association.
  •  2 years professional cataloging experience in original cataloging of multi-formats post Master’s degree.
  • Experience creating, editing, and transforming MARC and/or non-MARC metadata.
  • Experience working in an automated library system (preferably Innovative Interfaces) and/or experience with a digital collections creation and management tool, such as CONTENTdm or DSpace.
  • Familiarity with authority control.

PREFERRED:
  •  Broad understanding of emerging trends in digital technologies and library and archival practice.
  •  Working knowledge of MARC21 and non-MARC metadata schema including but not limited to EAD, MODS, METS, Dublin Core, etc.
  • Working knowledge of LC classification and subject headings.
  • Familiarity with AACR2, RDA, DACS, and the FRBR concepts.
  • Experience with controlled vocabularies or taxonomies, such as LCSH, MESH, etc.
  • Familiarity with HTML and XML.
  • Aptitude for learning new technologies and metadata standards.
  • Knowledge of archival theory and practice and technological applications related to archives, special collections, and records management.

 ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Provides cataloging, original and copy, for manuscript collections, rare books, university archives, oral histories, local documents, analytics, and other special materials as needed.
  • Provides, maintains, and enhances metadata for digital materials. 
  • Provides leadership in developing new communications methods and workflow to handle questions related to original cataloging and authority work.
  • Manipulates metadata to provide multiple access points for library resources.
  • Develops and provides training to library staff regarding resource description and metadata management.
  • Provides authority control and authority records as needed during the cataloging process.
  • Resolves problems in areas related to expertise, both for support staff and in the online catalog and other discovery tools.
  • Participates in the development, evaluation, and implementation of cataloging and metadata policies, standards, goals, procedures, and workflows.
  • Develops review methods for records of all Special Collections materials and assists in implementation of reviews
  • Oversees quality control for non-MARC metadata processes and projects as assigned.
  • Maintains current knowledge of evolving cataloging and metadata standards and practices, like EAD and RDA, linked data, semantic web applications, ontologies, and RDF.
  • Serves as resource for staff in other areas across the library in doing non-serial cataloging.
  • Participates in professional activities and in library and university faculty governance.
  • Supports and participates in other work of the department as assigned.
  • Possibly supervise students and up to two SPA staff.

Full-time (Work schedule may include evenings and weekends)
