Librarian I/II: Social Sciences


The Wayne State University Library System seeks a highly motivated, service-oriented individual committed to social sciences librarianship and interested in working in a team-based library environment as a user experience librarian.  Under general administrative oversight of the User Experience Director, the Social Sciences Librarian provides research services to faculty and students and participates in reference related projects with a focus in Sociology and Anthropology.  Within the Sociology and Anthropology departments, this position is charged with 1) building core relationships with major stakeholders as a liaison to assigned academic departments, identifying instruction opportunities and setting department information literacy goals to ensure quality curriculum support via student-based instructional efforts; and 2) working closely with colleagues to identify and advance opportunities for instruction and engagement with students and faculty to support development of collections.  This position actively contributes to the library’s outreach activities by establishing strong ties with faculty, effectively communicating with external clients and successfully marketing library services.  The individual in this position must exercise considerable judgment when making decisions, balancing competing priorities and communicating effectively with customers and colleagues.  
Required Qualifications:  Master's Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent; subject background in the social or behavioral sciences; public services experience in a large academic library setting; understanding of professional trends and new technologies relating to the provision of library resources and services; ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks in a rapidly changing environment; excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to collaborate with all levels of staff and with all ranges of campus and community partners; ability to manage projects and set and achieve individual and team goals; demonstrated commitment to expanding skills and professional growth.
Preferred Qualifications:  Second master’s degree in Sociology highly preferred, or advanced degree in other social science discipline; previous experience with reference and instruction in an academic library; experience with ICPSR or other data repository is desirable.
