Assistant Head, Scholarship and Education Services Associate Librarian


The J. Willard Marriott Library seeks an energetic, visionary, innovative, and accomplished professional for the newly created position of Assistant Head, Scholarship and Education Services. The ideal candidate will work with the Head of Scholarship and Education Services to provide leadership and guidance and to chart a future course that incorporates digital scholarship with the teaching and learning activities in the Library and the University of Utah campus.

Reporting to the Head of Scholarship and Education Services (Head, SES), responsibilities include: work closely with the Head, SES to provide strategic vision and leadership for Library digital scholarship and education services, coordinate the Library’s teaching and learning efforts, provide direction for further incorporating technology into course implementation, assist faculty inside and outside the Library with hybrid course development (online materials substitute for some in-person meetings) and the implementation of a flipped classroom model (rich media delivers information typically delivered as a lecture and this media supplements rather than replaces in-person sessions), assume primary leadership of the Visual, Information, and Technology Literacy (VITL) initiative (http://campusguides.lib.utah.edu//vitl), develop collaborative grant proposals to further research in Library instructional design, provide leadership for additional collaborations with TACC (Technology Assisted Curriculum Center) and CTLE (Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence) in the new Faculty Center, shape new directions for services that support student learning and faculty research and scholarship, serve as a role model for outreach and campus engagement that expands connections and builds partnerships, provide research and technology assistance in person at the Knowledge Commons and the Faculty Center as well as online through chat and email, and participate in teaching that includes first-year programs and other targeted courses in the campus curriculum.  The Assistant Head will contribute to implementation of action in the Marriott Library Strategic Plan (http://www.lib.utah.edu/info/Marriott Library Strategic Plan.pdf) and will be expected to be professionally active through participation in appropriate professional societies and through research and publication.

Required qualifications
  • ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS OR Masters degree in a specific discipline with professional experience working in an academic library OR equivalent academic credentials in digital scholarship or instructional design with professionally relevant experience
  • Demonstrated evidence of progressively increasing scope of leadership, management, and supervisory responsibilities and ability to foster an organization-wide perspective that ensures effective stewardship of available resources.
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in management and supervision, including hiring, orienting, training and development, organizing workloads, delegating responsibility, providing guidance and direction, monitoring and evaluating performance, coaching and counseling, and taking disciplinary action as necessary.
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to service excellence through experience in planning, developing, and assessing programs and in providing innovative services to faculty and students.
  • Demonstrated leadership and analytical skills and creative and innovative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to be proactive, flexible, and collaborative as a team leader in order to accomplish departmental, library, and institutional goals.
  • Outstanding analytical, organizational, project, and time management skills and ability to simultaneously lead multiple projects.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and complete tasks and projects on time and within budget.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and ability to work with a diverse student and faculty population.

Preferred qualifications
  • Doctoral degree or significant progress toward a doctoral degree in a relevant field
  • Experience with statistical analysis and using statistical software (IBM SPSS, ATLAS.ti, STATA, etc.)
  • Ability to develop assessment programs to improve instruction and/or digital scholarship services.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with information technology, specifically course management programs, such as Canvas, and library-relevant information technology applications and Internet and Web-based technologies that support digital scholarship.
  • Strong media technology and software skills.
  • Successful history of government or foundation grant applications and/or individual and corporate awards.
  • Experience teaching credit-bearing courses in a university setting.

Salary
$55,000+ dependent on qualifications.

Marriott Library is an ARL library with over 60,000 journals in electronic and print formats, 20 classrooms, Special Collections (Rare Books, Book Arts Program, Ski Archives, Middle East Library, etc.), Digital Scholarship Lab, over 100 digital collections, and seating for over 3,000 users. The University, with a student population of 30,000, is situated on a 1,500-acre campus in Salt Lake City.
