Head of Professional Programs


Grand Valley State University Libraries, a recipient of the 2012 Association of College and Research Libraries' Excellence in Academic Libraries Award, seeks energetic and collegial applicants for a Head of Professional Programs. This position provides oversight, guidance, and leadership for the University Libraries' professional programs and is responsible for directing the work of the Professional Programs liaison librarians in support of the Libraries' mission, goals, and strategic direction. The individual in this position works collaboratively with other department heads in the Research and Instructional Services division, and across the library, to facilitate communication and teamwork to provide excellent public services and communicate the importance of the library and its services to the higher education community.

The successful candidate will contribute to the libraries' overall management team and will directly assist in furthering the libraries' outreach, collection development, scholarly communications, and instructional goals. Required qualifications include a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited institution; exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; effective personnel management skills; experience leading in a team environment; three to five years of academic library experience or other relevant experience in a higher education setting; demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service. Applicants with experience fostering collaboration with campus units outside the library; previous management experience; and evidence of effective project management skills are preferred.

GVSU librarians are full members of the university faculty and must possess the potential to fulfill the requirements for promotion and tenure, and are expected to engage in scholarship and professional development, service to the institution, and institutional governance.
