Acquisitions Librarian (Assistant Professor)


The Department of the Library, at the College of Staten Island, seeks applicants for appointment to a tenure-track faculty position as Assistant Professor - Acquisitions Librarian beginning October 2012. The successful candidate will coordinate and manage the library acquisitions budget to acquire library materials in all formats, including print and electronic monographs, online databases, serials, multimedia, furniture, and supplies; track expenditures for all fund sources; and maintain and compile statistics for assessment surveys and quarterly budget reports. The Acquisitions Librarian will serve in a leadership role in collection development activities including assessment, selection, resource trials, and outreach to faculty; monitor long-term collection development commitments such as approval plans, serial subscriptions, patron-driven acquisitions, and electronic purchases vs. leasing programs. This individual will establish and maintain effective vendor relations and will serve as the liaison to the College's Purchasing and Accounts Payable departments. In addition, this position is responsible for working with the Office of Institutional Advancement to facilitate the receipt of gifts to the Library, including occasional off-campus review and collection of materials. The successful candidate is expected to provide reference and research assistance to library users and to pursue an active and productive academic agenda through scholarly publication, grant writing, and participation in professional conferences.

The ideal candidate will have a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline. A second graduate degree in addition to the MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school is required for a position as Assistant Professor. Preference will be given to candidates with basic knowledge and experience in the evaluation and acquisition of standard financial practices (e.g. budget reconciliation, fiscal year budgeting). Applicants should demonstrate: knowledge of trends and services in academic libraries with proficiency in the use of acquisition modules of library management systems (i.e. Aleph, OCLC); strong presentation, interpersonal, and negotiating skills; experience working in an academic library; and the ability to work individually and as a team member in a dynamic environment on a variety of projects simultaneously.
