Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Librarian


Washington University Libraries seek a service-oriented and innovative librarian to serve in this position to develop, expand, and support the campus GIS user community by assisting students and faculty in the selection and use of appropriate GIS technologies; coordinating GIS data access and acquisition; and providing instructional support in GIS.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The GIS librarian assumes responsibility for all aspects of the library’s GIS program, including instruction and outreach, data access and acquisition, provision of software/hardware, and future planning for GIS services. To fulfill these goals the GIS librarian will collaborate with subject librarians in outreach efforts to identify and support GIS opportunities in their disciplines; will work closely with the Digital Data Outreach librarian and Digital Repository librarian on data access and acquisition needs; and will assist faculty and students with specific GIS projects in support of their research, teaching, and learning endeavors. The GIS librarian will also work with University’s GIS Coordinator on campus-wide GIS projects and support.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required: MLS or degree in a relevant subject area with concentration in GIS or significant experience relevant to the position.   Preferred: Second master’s degree; demonstrated experience using and applying GIS in a library environment; familiarity with ArcGIS 10 or 10.1 GIS desktop; experience building GIS web services, ArcGIS server 10, the ESRI Geoportal, and with creating and maintaining appropriate geospatial metadata.
