Reference Librarian

Responsibilities:
The University of Alabama Health Sciences Library, College of Community Health Sciences, is seeking a creative and innovative health sciences librarian with technical skills for the position of Reference Librarian.  Responsibilities include providing reference service, research consultation, online searching, instruction to users and reference assistance; providing education on the use of the library and its resources, including individual, classroom, web-based and customized instruction; participating in collection development of both print and electronic resources; participating in website content development; serving as a member of the Health Science Library's management team, participating in the formation and implementation of library policies and procedures and long range strategic planning; compiling statistics on reference services usage; assisting with instruction of students from the School of Library and Information Studies; providing consumer health information and instruction to area residents; developing instructional publications in various formats; orienting new faculty, residents, students, and staff; participating in library outreach activities; representing the Health Sciences Library on college, university and community committees, as appropriate; participating in professional associations.

Qualifications:
Required – ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; proficiency in computer, Internet, and Web applications; attention to detail; strong commitment to teamwork; demonstrated ability to learn and apply new technologies; capability for multi-tasking responsibilities; commitment to professional growth and development, and willingness to participate in relevant professional activities. Creativity, flexibility, and a sense of humor are essential.

Preferred – 2 years reference experience in a health sciences library, skill in teaching adult learners, experience searching biomedical   literature and academic databases including PubMed, demonstrated enthusiasm and aptitude for emerging technologies, and ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
               
The ideal candidate will have a strong public service orientation, initiative, flexibility, and the ability to adapt and work creatively in a rapidly changing environment, demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all levels of library staff and patrons, and excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Salary/Benefits:
$40,700 minimum, assistant professor level.   Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.  This position is non-tenure earning and includes a generous benefits package.  Review of applications will begin immediately and will be accepted until the position is filled.
