Librarian for Life Sciences


The University of Virginia Library welcomes applications for the position of Librarian for Life Sciences in the Charles L. Brown Science and Engineering Library (http://www.lib.virginia.edu/science/).


The Library is seeking a flexible, enthusiastic information professional who will support teaching and research by actively engaging with faculty, students, and staff and managing relevant collections, services and initiatives to support programmatic needs of the departments in these areas. The Librarian for Life Sciences is responsible for collection development, instruction, outreach, reference service, and management of the Biology-Psychology Library and serves on the Library Management team for the Brown Science & Engineering Library. Responsibilities: Reporting to the Head of Collections and Services for the Brown Science & Engineering Library (BSEL), the Librarian for the Life Sciences will: Manage collection and liaison services for the Biology, Environmental Sciences, Psychology and Biomedical Engineering departments; Promote library services and represent the needs of the departments to improve and develop new ones; Speak knowledgeably about a range of library issues, including data services, open access, and the integration of information literacy skills into the curriculum; Partner with faculty and instructors to develop and teach course-integrated library sessions that meet curricular needs; Oversee management of Biology-Psychology Library and supervise one classified staff member; Contribute to the evaluation and planning of services and policies for the six science and engineering libraries by participating on the Brown Science and Engineering Management Team; Provide in-depth, specialized research consultation and reference, in person and virtually; Work with primary research community and other librarians to develop and sustain services for accessing and analyzing research data.


Qualifications, Required: Master's degree in library science or a related field; Demonstrated experience in libraries; Excellent communication skills; Ability to work effectively as part of a team; Understanding of the research process. Preferred: Experience or academic background in science or engineering; Supervisory experience; Experience with or knowledge of library-based support services for data curation, bioinformatics, or scholarly communication services.


Salary & Benefits: Entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply. Salary competitive, depending on qualifications. This position has general faculty status with excellent benefits, including 22 days of vacation and TIAA/CREF and other retirement plans.
