Head of the Systems Development Department


Old Dominion University Libraries is seeking an innovative and proactive Head of the Systems Development Department.  The successful candidate would provide departmental leadership and management and would develop, implement, and support all information systems for the ODU Libraries.  This includes planning for new technology, managing ongoing projects, directing daily technical operations, and participating on the technology management team for the 24/5 Learning Commons.  As a member of the Library Management Team, this position also plays a key role in library-wide planning, policy making, and the development, evaluation, and assessment of library services and resources.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA accredited MLS; knowledge/understanding of key issues and trends in digital initiatives and information technology, academic libraries, and higher education; managerial skills including excellent analytic and problem-solving abilities; excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications skills; knowledge of web technologies and standards, programming and scripting languages; leadership, analytical and creative and innovative problem solving skills; progressively responsible experience with information technology in a library; strong commitment to user-centered services and service excellence to all constituencies; administrative experience managing Unix/Linux servers and Windows workstations; experience managing an integrated Library System; experience in building and sustaining effective interpersonal relations with library staff, campus administrators, faculty and students. Preferred: Ability to work both as a team member and independently; knowledge of Service Management structures; demonstrated proficiency in a variety of web scripting languages, relational database applications and systems analysis; supervisory experience; experience with Innovative Interfaces’ Millennium system; project management experience; experience in leading the conceptual design, development, and implementation of next-generation digital initiatives and information technology services; experience in managing various technologies such as application systems, electronic resources, server and network infrastructure, public/staff computing areas, digital collections; experience coordinating and conducting technology training; record of contributions to the profession.
