Metadata Librarian (Librarian II or III) – Available September 2011

The Eastern Washington University Libraries is offering an 11 month full-time, tenure track faculty position as a Metadata Librarian at the Librarian II or III level depending on qualifications and level of experience. This position will begin September 1, 2011.
The position has professional responsibilities in librarianship, scholarship, and service. Responsibilities in librarianship focus on developing and maintaining the discovery engine used to find library resources; activities in cataloging, classification, and metadata creation for library resources; participating in production of archival digital collections and microfilm preservation; guiding the selection and use of metadata schemas, controlled vocabularies, and data dictionaries to facilitate use of digital collections and institutional repository as these develop; communicating and consulting with others about the organization, description, and discovery of library resources; and coordinating physical processing of tangible resources.
Workload includes: 80% responsibilities in librarianship, including metadata, cataloging, and bibliographic control and coordination of staff and processing operations; 20% service and professional development including research and publication.
Responsibilities in librarianship include, but may not be limited to, the following:
• Leads in developing discovery tools for library resources; partners with others to build digital archival collections and repository.
• Consults and communicates with varied constituencies in the library and the university, about the organization, description, and discovery of library and information resources.
• Performs and oversees cataloging, metadata, and classification activities, including coordinating with library systems staff on aspects of library systems and software, procedure development for copy cataloging and other work by support staff, and policy development.
• Responsible for identifying, batchloading, and integrating records from multiple sources, in MARC and non-MARC metadata schema.
• Oversees vendor-provided database updating (currently from BackStage Library Works).
• Updates and maintains the library’s discovery engine (currently WorldCat Local).
• Coordinates any shared or distributed cataloging and metadata activities with other Orbis Cascade Alliance libraries.
• Coordinates physical processing of tangible resources, including labeling, repair, etc.
• Leads digital asset management at JFK Library, and identifies opportunities for collaboration in digitization initiatives. Coordinates current digitization projects and plans for future ones.
• Shares production responsibilities for digital collection and digital or microfilm preservation activities (e.g. digitized Special Collections, repository of EWU theses; microfilming local newspapers).
• Guides and collaborates on the selection and use of metadata schemas, controlled vocabularies, data dictionaries, etc., to provide access to digital collections and to a centralized or distributed institutional repository as these develop.
• First-line supervision of staff working on cataloging, metadata, and digital collection production.
• Participates in library committees and working groups. Collaborates with colleagues and clients across the university and the library’s regional consortium.
• Meet qualifications for a Librarian II or Librarian III position, as defined in Library Faculty Policies & Procedures, Part VII of the EWU Library Plan, available at http://www.ewu.edu/Documents/Library/TheLibraryPlan%202000-2005.pdf including Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or comparable accredited foreign program (among other qualifications identified in the Library Faculty Policies & Procedures at the above link).
• Knowledge of and experienced in use of current and emerging cataloging standards, including RDA, AACR, LCCS, LCSH, OCLC Bibliographic Input Standards, etc. Experience in cataloging library resources in a variety of formats.
• Knowledge of and experienced in use of MARC; knowledge of a minimum of one other metadata standard, such as such as DC, CCO, DACS, DCRM(B), EAD, METS, MODS, VRA, CCO, etc.
• Demonstrated success in managing personnel and operations in cataloging/metadata functions.
• Demonstrated high level of written and oral communication, organizational, problem-solving and planning skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of faculty, staff, and clients.
• Ability, during the probationary period, to meet library faculty requirements for tenure in the areas of scholarship and service, as defined in Library Faculty Policies & Procedures.
• Commitment to excellence in bibliographic control and discovery of library resources.
• Commitment to excellence in services to students, faculty, and staff.
• Demonstrated interest, ability and/or experience in promoting cultural competency and/or diversity.
• Active participation in professional dialogue and contribution to academic librarianship, through participation in professional associations, publication, etc.
• Demonstrated initiative in investigating new ideas and implementing change, to improve access to library collections.
• Knowledge of ContentDM or comparable system.
• Knowledge of one or more digital repository systems.
• Knowledge of additional metadata standards.
• Successful experience in staff training, position design, workflow design, and other management and supervisory functions.
Salary/Appointment: This is an 11-month, tenure-track appointment at the Librarian II or Librarian III level (DOE/DOQ) with a salary commensurate with qualifications and job experience (approximately $58,000.) Benefits include participation in TIAA/CREF retirement program; comprehensive medical insurance; 1-day per month accrued annual leave, plus established holidays; generous sick leave; no state or local income taxes.
