Reference and Instruction Librarian

GRINNELL COLLEGE LIBRARIES (REFERENCE AND INSTRUCTION LIBRARIAN) – 10-MONTH TERM (START AUGUST 2011)

GRINNELL COLLEGE. The Grinnell College Libraries seek a librarian to fill a 10-month term appointment with rank as Assistant Professor. The appointee will work assigned hours at a reference desk (the schedule may include day, evening, and weekend hours), provide by-appointment consultations, teach information literacy classes, and fulfill other responsibilities depending on library needs and the appointee’s interests and skills. This position requires a graduate degree in librarianship from an American Library Association-accredited institution, excellent oral and written communication skills, self-motivation, ability to be effective and tactful in working with a diverse campus community that makes heavy demands on library services, and a preference for working in a collaborative environment. Background and interest in the humanities preferred. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply. Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college whose curriculum is founded on a strong advising system and close student-faculty interaction, with few college-wide requirements beyond the completion of a major. The College places a high priority on information literacy and the Libraries are integrally involved with student education through teaching, consultation, and development of the collections and tools necessary for conducting inquiry. The Grinnell College Libraries were the 2011 ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries award winner in the college library category.

In letters of application, candidates should discuss their interest in developing as a librarian and scholar in an undergraduate, liberal-arts college that emphasizes close student-faculty interaction. They also should discuss what they can contribute to efforts to cultivate a wide diversity of people and perspectives, a core value of Grinnell College.

To be assured of full consideration, all application materials should be received by June 1, 2011.

Please submit applications online by visiting our application website at https://jobs.grinnell.edu. Candidates will need to upload a letter of application, curriculum vita, and provide email addresses for three references, including current supervisor. Official transcripts will be required of candidates selected for an on-campus interview. Questions about this search should be directed to the search chair, Richard Fyffe, Librarian of the College, at LibrarySearch@grinnell.edu or 641-269-3351.

Salary range of $47,500 or higher, depending on qualifications.
