Position: Head of Research and Instructional Services
Reports to: Dean of Libraries

Marquette University Raynor Memorial Libraries seek a creative and dynamic librarian with strong leadership and managerial skills and customer service orientation for the position of Head of Research and Instructional Services.

Specific Responsibilities:
·         Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, this senior leadership position manages, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates a department of 11.5 librarians, an instructional designer and one support staff;
·         Coordinates departmental activities that include research services, instruction, e-learning, diversity, and collection development (in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Scholarly Resources and Collections), a digital media studio, a funding information center, and marketing of services;
·         Facilitates a collegial work environment, evaluating needs, processes, and staffing requirements; cultivates and promotes interdepartmental communication;
·         Implements policies and procedures in accordance with new developments and emerging technologies in reference service and instruction;
·         Provides leadership and actively engages staff in working with faculty and graduate assistants as partners in the integration of information literacy into the curriculum and works with other units on campus in support of faculty teaching and student learning;
·         Serves as a member of Leadership Council and the Libraries’ Assessment Committee
·         Collaborates with colleagues in library-wide planning, budgeting, and policy development;
·         Contributes to and learns from the profession through such avenues as local, state, and national professional organizations, presentations, and publications.

Setting: Marquette University is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit doctoral-granting institution with an enrollment of 12,000 located near downtown Milwaukee. Two adjacent and connected library buildings seat 2,150 and house a 1.7 million volume collection, 300 networked resources, and over 22,000 electronic journals.  http://www.marquette.edu/library/

Required Qualifications:
  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science
  • Five years’ (minimum) managerial experience in an academic or research library
  • Experience supervising full time staff
  • Experience with current and emerging library technologies related to the delivery of reference and instruction
  • Demonstrated knowledge of  trends and best practices in reference and instruction
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and commitment to excellence in the provision of service
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and an ability to work with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff
  • Experience with planning and implementing new services
  • Ability to interact effectively with a broad range of staff within the Libraries, the University, and in collaborative initiatives with other institutions
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and listening skills
  • Record of professional involvement at the regional and national level OR
  • Record of professional activity in areas related to position responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supervising professional staff
  • Experience with collection development
  • Experience with assessment tools
