Scholarly Communications Librarian

The J. Murrey Atkins Library at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking a Scholarly Communications Librarian to educate faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates as to current copyright practices and also help interpret copyright issues as they occur in the course of library operations. This position would work in conjunction with the University’s General Counsel, with the understanding that the Library has no role in providing legal advice or establishing policy at any level. This position’s role is educational as it regards faculty and students, and advisory as it relates to library operations. RESPONSIBILITIES:
          Develop and deliver focused workshops as well as individual guidance for library employees – tailored to both general and specific departmental needs.

          Develop and upload an extensive copyright/scholarly communication website.

          In conjunction with the Office of Legal Affairs, provide individual guidance to the librarians and the campus community, particularly as related to library materials and services.

          Clearly communicate that any information dispensed is not legal advice and that the only office on campus that provides legal advice is the Office of Legal Affairs.

          Consolidate library copyright information and resources as well as assisting various library units in updating and/or reconciling practices and procedures, as appropriate.

          Assist the Associate Librarian for Collection Development in interpreting license agreements or in proposing desired language, when warranted, on database licensing and user privacy issues.

          Serve as a central resource for information and consistent guidance on scholarly communication and copyright compliance and education in academic library settings.

          Track developments (legislatively and otherwise) affecting these issues and develop responses or comments, if appropriate, on behalf of the University Librarian.

          Assist faculty in understanding their rights, options, and responsibilities as authors of scholarly works.

          Provide input, as requested, into library policy development, analysis of library legal forms and so forth.


REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERRED ABILITIES:
Required:
          J.D. (Juris Doctor) or Master’s in Library Science or Information Science, with coursework in copyright & intellectual property
          Minimum 3 years of successful experience in a research library with emphasis on faculty interaction on matters of scholarly communication
          Demonstrated expertise in the legal and regulatory issues associated with intellectual property and copyright
          Significant experience with scholarly communication issues as they relate to academic/research libraries

Preferred:
          Additional graduate degree(s).

POSITION INFORMATION:

          Full-time
          Faculty status. Librarians are expected to show evidence of ongoing professional development and services to the profession

          Salary – $68,000 - $72,000 - competitive and dependent upon relevant experience and abilities.
