$1923.50 - $2354 per month, depending on qualifications
This is a two-year temporary, half-time position starting September 2010.

The University of California, Berkeley seeks an energetic and service-oriented librarian who is interested in a half-time, temporary position to provide reference and instructional services in a dynamic and challenging academic environment within the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, the primary libraries for humanities, social sciences, and undergraduate services on the Berkeley campus. This is a temporary position that spans September 2010 through August 2012.

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally-renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation’s premier public universities. In a highly-diverse and intellectually-rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 23,000 undergraduate students, 9,000 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty. The Library is comprised of 20 libraries, including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, The Bancroft Library, and the East Asian Library collectively offering extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills. The Doe/Moffitt Libraries are organized under the direction of the Associate University Librarian for Educational Initiatives and Director of Doe/Moffitt into five administrative departments: Circulation Services; Interlibrary Services; Instruction and User Services; Research and Collections for Humanities and Social Sciences; and Research and Collections for International and Area Studies.

Doe/Moffitt Libraries’ staff collaboratively build the print and electronic collections for Doe and Moffitt; provide reference services in-person and virtually through various technologies; engage in library instruction activities; manage various public service units; and serve as liaisons to more than 58 academic departments, centers, and programs on campus.

Under the direct supervision of the Head of Instruction and User Services, the successful candidate will work as a core member of the team providing information to individuals needing an introduction to the Library's collections, services, and online database platforms; offering subject and curriculum-based reference service to students working on class projects and research papers; and providing general and specialized reference service to researchers, scholars, graduate students, and undergraduates working in the humanities and social sciences. In addition to in-depth reference service, the librarian will provide informed connections between students and subject, area, or language specialists, and make informed referrals to campus subject libraries, public and specialized libraries, and information centers as appropriate. The librarian will also independently plan and deliver original class content for courses in a wide range of academic departments; develop guides, web sites, online learning objects, and other instructional content to support faculty and instructors; and participate in the Library’s drop-in workshop program.

The librarian will be working with a 40,000 volume print reference and bibliography collection covering the social sciences, humanities, and area studies, including the Library's rich collection of government documents. The librarian will be accessing, teaching, and referring to subsets of a vast array of digital resources, including web-based public access catalogs, web-based electronic resources, including indexes and abstracts, full-text article databases, online encyclopedias and gateway sites, and other print and electronic reference resources.

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to work effectively in a shared decision-making environment and to be active professionally. Professional contributions beyond the primary responsibilities are required for advancement in the Librarian series. The successful candidate will show promise or evidence of such contributions.


- MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited library school
- Demonstrated aptitude for teaching and developing user-oriented documentation
- Knowledge of relevant social science and humanities reference resources
- Experience assisting others with Internet resources and computer technology
- Demonstrated initiative and flexibility
- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team in a collegial environment
- Excellent interpersonal, communications, organizational, and analytic skills


- Liberal arts education with emphasis on a humanities or social science field
- Experience providing instruction in an academic library environment
- Experience providing reference service in an academic library environment
- Demonstrated ability to work with faculty, students, and the general public
- Knowledge of scholarly research methods in academic libraries
