York University Libraries are seeking an innovative and energetic librarian for the position of Cataloguing and Metadata Librarian in Bibliographic Services to connect
users with collections in a position that will blend emerging metadata applications with traditional cataloguing during a three year contractually-limited appointment, the position is available from September 1, 2010. Librarians in Bibliographic Services are leaders in providing optimum bibliographic access to the Libraries' rapidly growing collection of electronic resources such as journals, monographs, digital objects, theses, and data.

Also responsible for providing leadership in planning and developing new procedures, workflow and training needs, monitoring trends in metadata standards and access to digital resources. Participates in library committees, task forces and special projects, particularly those relating to bibliographic control, cataloguing, metadata and digital initiatives. The incumbent is also expected and encouraged to advance the profession through research, publication and participation in professional organizations.

Qualifications:

• MLS (or recognized equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program
• Up to 3 years of post-MLS experience
• Demonstrated knowledge and expertise relevant to cataloguing electronic resources
• Knowledge of cataloguing and authority control in an online environment
• Knowledge of MARC formats, XML, metadata standards, AACR2 rev, LC classification and subject headings
• Knowledge of cataloguing tools such as MARCEdit and MARC Report
• Knowledge of emerging trends in cataloguing, such as RDA and FRBR and in library and information technologies

The Head of Library Technologies Librarian at the Portland State University Library provides a key role in the leadership of the Library’s information technology infrastructure and services, including supervision of the Library Technologies team’s activities and staff. This position oversees library technology projects and systems, and works with system vendors, programmers, librarians, staff, and public end-users to develop, evaluate, implement, and support a variety of systems. Services and systems currently include: the Library’s integrated library system (Innovative Interfaces’ Millennium system), the Library’s multiple Web sites, servers, and interfaces; major applications for interlibrary loan and course reserves operations, the PSU digital repository, instructional technology, and provision of staff and public computing. This is a full-time, 12-month, unclassified, excluded, tenure-track position with the rank of Assistant Professor. This position reports to the Associate University Librarian, contributes to the profession through professional service and scholarly activities, and participates in faculty governance activities within the Library and University.

Specific Responsibilities
• Adhere to University and Library policies and procedures, including Portland State University’s Professional Standards of Conduct (http://www.pdx.edu/hr/professional-standards-conduct).
• Manage the Library Technologies team of four staff and two students. Plan, coordinate, and evaluate daily operations of the team’s activities, projects, and staff so as to provide timely, professional, and consistent library service.
o Supervise, hire, train, and evaluate Library Technologies team members, as necessary, maintaining established unit performance standards and providing conflict resolution when necessary.
o Act as advocate of unit staff and be committed to staff development and staff participation in unit planning and decision making; promote high staff performance through teamwork, job training and enrichment, encouragement of innovation and recognition for achievement.
o Manage technology-related vendor relations, including selection and performance evaluation.
o Coordinate unit activities with those of other Library units.
• Lead the Integrated Library System (ILS) team and attend other functional subgroups’ meetings as necessary; provide oversight and management of technical support and coordination for ILS-related issues and functions.
• Participate in the continual evaluation of the technologies being provided in the Portland State Library, making suggestions for service enhancements, greater efficiency, or cost containment; collect and analyze management data for patterns and trends that suggest a need for change, or positioning for the future; and prepare reports on activities, problems, challenges, and accomplishments of acquisitions and preservation.
• Ensure that the short- and long-range planning processes for Library Technologies are anticipatory, rather than reactive, and that they provide an effective means to meet the Library’s mission and priorities. Evaluate alternatives in terms of cost effectiveness, quality of services, and larger institutional priorities.
• Participate in leadership within the Resource Services & Technology (RST) unit through participation in the Coordinating Team (C-Team), which helps to advise the Associate UL in the development of unit-wide policies and guidelines.
• Coordinate communication concerning library technologies-related issues, services, policies, and procedures with library staff, users, academic units served, and external partners.
• Participate in promoting and providing visibility for a positive, responsive image of the Library and its services to the University community and the community at large.
• Communicate openly and professionally with staff, colleagues, and with Library Administration.
• Participate in the establishment of short- and long-range library information technology goals, objectives, and priorities, aligned with those of the Library and the University.
• Maintain current expertise through participation in workshops, classes, professional associations and networks, and through continued awareness of the scholarly literature.

Required Qualifications:
• ALA-accredited MLS or its equivalent.
• Minimum of three years or more of progressively responsible experience managing library systems.

The University of Michigan Library is seeking a talented user experience professional to join our newly formed User Experience (UX) Department. We are looking for someone with a passion for user research, the ability to create engaging designs, and an investment in improving the library users' web experience. This position will be a full-time, three-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal.

The User Experience Department is part of the Library Information Technology Division (LIT) at the University of Michigan, University Library. LIT is the library's key organization for the creation, deployment and support of the library's primary web interfaces (Library Website, Mirlyn Library Catalog, Digital Library Collections, and HathiTrust Digital Library).

The UX department will focus on interface design, mobile design and development, usability testing, user research, web use statistics, and accessibility. The UX Specialist works in a collaborative team environment - working closely with the UX Department Manager and UX Mobile Developer as well as LIT and library-wide project stakeholders. The UX Specialist will help drive interface development through an iterative usability and design process. Candidates who have experience in only interface design or usability will also be considered.

User Research 40%
• Conducts ongoing discovery of user needs, both prior to and following interface deployment by analyzing user and institutional needs.
• Designs and conducts user research/usability evaluations using a variety of techniques (e.g. formal/informal user testing, online surveys, card sorting, interviews, personas & scenarios, use cases, focus groups, ethnographic research techniques).

Interface Design 40%

• Conducts ongoing research into the development of new interface capabilities, enhancements, and user-centered design trends.

Project Management & Communication 20%
• Helps to establish project priorities and discuss design goals with LIT managers, project stakeholders, developers, and library staff.
• Performs occasional project management duties including establishment of timelines, coordination of staff, scheduling, and reporting.
• Participates, as needed, on library committees. May provide advice or assistance to other units within the University Library on user research or interface issues.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
• ALA-accredited Masters Degree in Library or Information Science, or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree in Graphic Design, UxD, HCI and significant professional experience in a related field.
• Knowledge and experience in areas of user research and usability methods, design, and analysis.
• Experience creating concept sketches, flow diagrams, wire frames, and mock-ups.

- Processing all library materials.

• Manages library budgets, including expended and encumbered funds.

Anticipated Starting Compensation
Starting at $51,971–$70,474 annually, based on documented education and experience. In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate can also earn a Doctoral stipend of $2,850 or a multiple Masters’ stipend of $2,021, if applicable. In addition, the District provides an excellent fringe benefits package, including paid medical and dental coverage for employees and dependents, and a vision plan, life insurance and long-term disability benefits for the employee only. Assignment & Anticipated Start Date

Reporting to the University Librarian, the incumbent provides management of the entire Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant funded project, Virtual Terrapin Station: Blending Traditional and Socially Created Archives for Research, Teaching, and Cultural Enrichment. The Project Manager will be a member of the Grateful Dead Archive team and will be directly responsible for the planning, coordination, design, and execution of the archive exhibition website and community web publishing platform. The Project Manager will oversee communication with the IMLS (the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a grant-making federal agency) including interim and final reports. The Grateful Dead Archive is a multimillion dollar collection that has sparked international interest. This position is responsible for overseeing the creation and implementation of the "Virtual Terrapin Station" that will incorporate digitized content from the archive plus materials contributed from the Deadhead community. Specific responsibilities include the development of a detailed project plan to design the website, digitize material for it, build a rights tracking function, and oversee the development of software to enable the exchange of information between library systems. The Project Manager has responsibility for the timely and successful distribution of over $1.4 million dollars comprised of the original IMLS grant and matching Library funds according to strict rules and deadlines per the general terms and conditions of the grant.

Under general direction of the University Librarian, the Project Manager formulates policy for the project administration and establishes the methods used to attain the goals of the technology project.

Qualifications include:
•Professional degree from a library school or other appropriate degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields relevant to library services

•At least 2-3 years of progressive experience working on digital library team projects in a leadership role, including substantive experience with archival materials in an academic or research library environment

•Demonstrated broad knowledge of project management concepts, practices, standards and processes

Scott Library, the largest of York University’s libraries, houses a research collection of over two million items in the social sciences, humanities and fine arts that includes government documents, data, sound and moving images, electronic resources, archives and special collections. Along with building collections and offering reference assistance, the Scott Library Reference Department has an active and growing information literacy program, which aims to enable students, faculty, and others to recognize the social context of information, to develop information-seeking behaviours that transcend specific finding tools, and to think critically about information.

The successful candidate will participate in teaching, reference, collection and liaison activities in the Libraries and elsewhere on campus, and in the development of new programs and services. This librarian will have special responsibility for Environmental Studies collection activities, liaison, and information literacy teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
