QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Required:
· ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library science from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association.
· One year of library experience with technical services work, including cataloging, systems, collection development, or serial acquisitions management.
· Experience working with an automated acquisitions system or an automated library system.
· Ability to manage tasks in response to varying time pressures with shifting priorities and changing constraints.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of the unit head and/or the dean of libraries, the BMS librarian provides expertise and leadership in the acquisition and cataloging of monographs (including other formats such as media scores and documents). The position includes professional oversight of the processes and staff that support the acquisition and cataloging of monographs, including management of the Approval Plan; copy cataloging, work flows, project design and implementation. Works collaboratively with other BMS Librarians and has shared responsibility for making decisions or recommendations pertaining to the online catalog databases as a whole (authority control, support contracts, record standards, relationship and communication with affiliate libraries) and for planning and communicating changes in BMS processes or policy that affect the access to materials and activities of the library. The BMS Librarian is responsible for original cataloging of monographs in a variety of formats, languages, and subject areas, using a variety of classification schemes, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and/or other established Thesauri.

Required Qualifications:
· ALA Accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent
· Experience or coursework related to cataloging
· Project management skills including ability to organize work flows for efficient and effective use of staff time to accomplish a stated task within agreed upon constraints of time, budget.
· Demonstrated leadership and management skills and abilities that include, but are not limited to, supervising staff and managing funds.

The Assistant Department Head, working with the Head Librarian of the Cataloging & Metadata Services Department, coordinates, plans and manages the staff and daily operations of the department. The successful candidate will be a team player with leadership abilities who will collaboratively develop new services and mentors department staff in the cataloging of all formats. In detail, responsibilities will include:
Supervising classified and profession staff totaling 6 FTE as well as the operations of the Serials, Monograph & Media and Copy-Cataloging Services units.
Serving as a resource person regarding cataloging issues both within the Department and in other areas of the Libraries.
Performing original and complex cataloging and authority work for all types of formats.
Managing and contributing cataloging and metadata for digital projects.
As a member of the Cataloging Management Committee, participating in developing cataloging policies and procedures, and in local implementation of changes in national standards, rules and best practices for cataloging.
In consultation with the Department Head and other staff, assisting to determine training needs and designs and/or coordinates and/or delivers the training curricula, and establishes performance standards for the cataloging staff.
Maintaining awareness of and engagement with national and international trends and developments in cataloging and metadata standards, bibliographic and authority control, and knowledge management.
Participating in library committees, task forces, and special projects, particularly those related to cataloging, metadata application and bibliographic control.
Leading or coordinating selected cataloging projects to be either outsourced or managed internally.

Required Qualifications: MLS from an ALA accredited graduate program. Experience cataloging in an academic or research library. A minimum of three years experience cataloging in an online environment. Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging standards, practices, and products, including but not limited to LC classification, LCSH, MARC formats, AACR2, LCRIs. Experience with OCLC Connexion and integrated library systems. Demonstrated experience cataloging a variety of materials or formats (monographs, serials, videos/DVDs, electronic, etc.). Experience directing and assessing the work of others in a supervisory role. Experience with staff training, including preparing handouts or other necessary documentation. Excellent interpersonal skills including oral and written communication and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Working knowledge of one or more Western European languages. Minimum of three years supervisory experience. Experience with a national cooperative cataloging program such as PCC (NACO, BIBCO, CONSER or SACO). Experience with serials cataloging using AACR2, LCSH, MARC21 formats, CONSER Manual and CONSER Editing Guide. Experience planning and managing projects. Experience with Millennium (Innovative Interfaces) software. Knowledge of non-MARC metadata schemes. Demonstrated participation in library, university, state, and national programs and initiatives. Evidence of well-developed interpersonal skills, team-building, initiative, creative energy, and resourcefulness. Demonstrated problem-solving skills.

Salary and Benefits: $55,000 - $65,000 annually, negotiable depending on qualifications and experience. No state or local income tax. Head of Collection Development Department

The University of California, Irvine Libraries are seeking a dynamic, knowledgeable leader to join an enthusiastic staff in building a research library of excellence for a young and rapidly-growing university ranked nationally in the top universities. The Head of Collection Development Department will work in an entrepreneurial and service-oriented collaborative environment to ensure that both learning and research intensive collections are of the highest quality.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will play a key role in leading innovation in the Collection Development Department and the Collections Division. As a member of Library Council, the incumbent participates in library wide planning and policy making. The Head of Collection Development Department oversees collection development and management of general resources in all formats library wide and ensures a high caliber collection that supports the teaching, research, and patient care needs of the campus.

More than 20 subject specialist Research Librarians whose duties include reference, instruction, and collection development, are based in either the Collection Development Department or the Reference Department. The Head of Collection Development Department oversees and evaluates the collection development, collection management, and faculty/student liaison activities of all of these Research Librarians, approximately five of whom report directly to this position. In addition, Head of Collection Development Department will collaborate, as necessary, with the new UC Irvine Law Library.

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Collections, the Head of Collection Development Department participates as a member on divisional and library-wide teams, task forces, and project teams as appropriate and is expected to work comfortably and with a high degree of expertise in a shared decision-making environment.

The following duties are those for which the Head of Collection Development Department holds primary responsibility:

· Manages day-to-day collection development/management functions and operations, assuring the high quality and ongoing excellence of collections in all three UCI Libraries.
· Monitors the Libraries’ materials budget of approximately $9 million.
· Manages departmental budgets, policies, procedures, and web pages.
· Coordinates collection development/management and faculty/student liaison activities of Research Librarians
· Collaborates as necessary on collection development activities with the Law Library
· Responsible for recruitment, retention, training, and evaluation of Research Librarians in conjunction with the Head of the Reference Department.
· Directly supervises and conducts performance reviews for Collection Development Department staff.
· Chairs the Collection Development Department meetings, the Collections Coordinating Council, and the Bibliographers Group.
· Acts as a spokesperson for the UCI Libraries to the campus community as appropriate in conjunction with the Research Librarians and the Associate University Librarian for Collections; fosters good communication and effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and other library users.
· Manages the Libraries’ approval plans with input from the Research Librarians and in consultation with Acquisitions.
· Approves licenses for electronic resources and media and works with Acquisitions to advise on complex license negotiations.
· Supervises special projects in collection development and collection management.
· Coordinates a range of library wide collection development preservation activities (both print and digital), and participates in UC system wide preservation issues.
· Ensures excellent communication and cooperation with other departments in the Libraries.
· Participates in the Libraries’ development efforts as they relate to collection development.
· Maintains regular and close communication with the Associate University Librarian for Collections.
· May have opportunities for collection development and liaison responsibilities for a particular academic program, depending on background and experience.

The following duties are those for which the Head of Collection Development Department holds secondary responsibility, in consultation with the Associate University Librarian for Collections and the bibliographers:

· Coordinates the preparation and allocation of the Libraries’ materials budget of approximately $9 million.
· Provides leadership and coordination in developing, evaluating and assessing the Libraries’ collections to support the University’s research, teaching and patient care programs.
· Participates in defining and implementing key strategies for acquiring or accessing electronic resources.
· Coordinates the Libraries’ participation in UC system wide cooperative/collaborative collection development efforts and digital library initiatives.
· Provides leadership in the application of new technologies related to collection development/management.

Qualifications

Required:

· Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent combination of relevant advanced degree and library experience.
· Collection development and collection management experience in an academic library, research library, or major public library.
· Ability to oversee collections in the full range of subjects at UCI.

The Collection Development Department

The Collection Development Department is responsible for the library wide development and management of general collections in the Langson Library, Science Library, and Grunigen Medical Library under the administration and coordination of the Associate University Librarian for Collections. This department takes the lead role in developing and planning the overarching and ongoing collections policies, procedures, and projects that ensure that the scholarly resources available meet the campus teaching, research, and patient care needs.

The department consists of the Department Head, the Collections Assistant, and approximately five Research Librarians, who are responsible for supporting the collection, liaison, and service needs of UCI academic programs. In addition, there are 15+ other Research Librarians located in departments throughout the Libraries, who are responsible for both collections and services in their specialized disciplines. Each Research Librarian is a member of one of three discipline-based pods (or teams) as well as of the library wide Bibliographers Group.


The Libraries

The UCI Libraries are committed to innovation and excellence and are in a major period of growth and change. The Libraries consist of the Langson Library, the Science Library, the Library Gateway Study Center, and the Grunigen Medical Library. The Langson Library primarily serves the Schools of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, Social Ecology, Business, the Department of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies. The Science Library primarily serves the College of Health Sciences (including the School of Medicine) and the Schools of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Information and Computer Sciences. Digital Projects Specialist (Temporary)

The UCI Libraries seek an experienced professional in the field of digital project management to support the Libraries' digital services. This is a temporary one-year appointment. The incumbent will explore, adapt, and support library information technologies for digital projects, including the application of standards, metadata, discovery interfaces, workflow design, production coordination, and quality controls appropriate to specific projects. Reporting to the Head of Information Technology, the successful candidate will work collaboratively with a variety of Libraries’ staff involved in digital preservation, management, and scholarship.

Core Duties:
· Plans and implements the submission process for digital assets to various digital services including the UC Libraries Digital Preservation Repository (DPR).
· Works with the Libraries’ Digital Scholarship Program Working Group to develop solutions that can be integrated with other systems utilizing current standards and within the context of the Libraries' infrastructure.
· Collaborates and coordinates with other staff in the UCI Libraries, on campus and system-wide as appropriate
· Creates and maintains work and procedure documentation.
· Provides training, instruction, support, and documentation to library staff and non-technical personnel involved with projects.

Qualifications:

Required

· Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent combination of relevant advanced degree and library experience
· Familiarity with current/emerging digital preservation technologies as well as digital library standards, protocols, and architectures
· Solid understanding of digital repository software (DSpace, Fedora, EPrints)
· Experience with or knowledge of relevant software tools and platforms, storage issues, and metadata issues pertinent to digital libraries and/or institutional repositories
· Experience with XML and XML-related technologies, such as XSLT, SGML/XML/XSL.
· Thorough understanding of standards and best practices for digital collections
· Working knowledge of a range of computing platforms, storage environments, and digital library metadata frameworks (such as METS, MIX, and PREMIS, as well as the OAIS model)
· Knowledge of digital reformatting and digital conversion policies and technical procedures, including cost factors and productivity issues;
· Ability to draft and maintain clear documentation and policies for digital projects and programs
· Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills;
· Excellent communication skills, including effective presentation and writing skills
· Ability to develop knowledge and skills related to the position continuously
· Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships ad to interact diplomatically with diverse constituencies
· Ability to work effectively in a team and in a dynamically changing environment
Preferred:
· Experience planning, implementing, and/or maintaining an institutional repository (IR) using DSpace, ContentDM, Fedora, or another IR package
· Basic knowledge of copyright and rights management issues as they relate to digital reformatting and scholarly communication
· Working knowledge of the University of California policies and procedures.


The Information Technology Department
The Information Technology Department is part of the Public Services Division. The department supports the infrastructure, systems administration, network, desktop, web presence, and digital project needs of the UCI Libraries, servicing all library staff and the University community. The Department comprises the Director, one librarian, and 12 staff positions.

The Libraries

The UCI Libraries are committed to innovation and excellence and are in a major period of growth and change. The Libraries consist of the Langson Library, the Science Library, the Library Gateway Study Center, and the Grunigen Medical Library. The Langson Library primarily serves the Schools of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, Social Ecology, Business, the Department of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies. The Science Library primarily serves the College of Health Sciences (including the School of Medicine) and the Schools of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Information and Computer Sciences. The Grunigen Medical Library serves the clinical needs of the Health Sciences at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, located in Orange, 12 miles from the main campus.

The UCI Libraries have a staff of 248 FTE and an organizational structure that includes the use of teams in conjunction with departments. The library collection consists of over 3.1 million volumes, over 51,000 current serial titles, and an aggressively expanding electronic resources collection. Salary & Benefits: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Preferred appointment level: $47,087 - $68,892 (Associate Librarian I – Librarian I).

Librarians are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, thirteen paid holidays, and one day per month sick leave. The University has an excellent retirement system and offers a variety of group health, life, and disability insurance plans. Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary.

Reporting to the Head of Information Services, the Information Services Librarian works as one of a team of ten librarians. The Information Services Librarian provides both traditional and online reference services, library and related research instruction, and information literacy services. This Librarian will collect print, electronic and multimedia resources in selected disciplines and provide tailored discipline-related services to faculty and students in those departments of the College and related work as assigned. In addition to the above, the Weekend Supervisor's additional responsibilities include overseeing all library services and building activities on weekends, including reference and instruction. It should be noted that the work schedule during the academic year will be Saturdays and Sundays in addition to three weekdays and participation in the regular evening rotation.

Qualifications:
A.L.A. accredited Masters degree in library and information science (for appointment as an instructor); a second masters in a subject area (for appointment at the rank of assistant professor); reference services experience, a minimum of one year of supervisory experience; excellent interpersonal skills; a commitment to innovative and effective user-centered services; knowledge of current trends in scholarly communication and information technologies; superior oral and written skills; ability to work effectively on shared projects and on department and college committees.
