The College of Education at East Carolina University seeks applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Library Science available July 1, 2009. The chairperson will provide instructional leadership and teach LIBS courses as appropriate. This is a full-time, twelve-month, tenured faculty position which reports to the Dean of the College of Education and represents the department on the College of Education Leadership Team and the Advisory Council. Rank and Salary: Associate/Full Professor; commensurate with qualifications.

The Department of Library Science offers the Master of Library Science (MLS), with concentrations in school, public and academic librarianship. The College of Education prepares more professional educators for North Carolina schools than any other university in the state and is one of only four nationwide recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for developing "cutting-edge programs that will provide powerful examples for others." East Carolina University, the third largest university in the UNC system, is a rapidly growing institution of over 27,000 students committed to excellence in research and teaching. ECU is located in Greenville, within North Carolina's coastal plain and a short distance from beaches and the ocean. A doctoral intensive university, ECU offers more than 104 bachelor's degree programs, 73 master's degree programs, 4 intermediate degree programs, 17 doctoral programs and 2 first professional degree programs (MD, DDS).

Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate from an appropriately accredited institution in library science or related field, a strong record of research and publication, and a record of service in relevant professional organizations at the state and national levels. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to possess qualifications and credentials necessary for tenure. Successful candidates should be able to communicate effectively, perform research or other creative academic activity, and perform all tasks necessary for carrying out instructional and administrative activities.
