Department Head - Alaska Polar Regions

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Libraries seeks a knowledgeable, innovative, and resourceful administrator to head the Alaska & Polar Regions Collections, one of the world's pre-eminent collections of Alaskana and Arctic/Antarctic materials. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the successful candidate will provide leadership and coordination of planning, policy development, and resource allocation for the department and will serve on the library's management team. The department head will initiate collaborations with local, national, and international programs, advance new initiatives in outreach and digital projects, and will lead an active development program. As a member of the faculty, s/he supports the University of Alaska tripartite mission of performing teaching, research, and public service.

The Alaska & Polar Regions Collections (APR) house the world's largest collection of Alaskana and is a leader in Polar research materials, with an emphasis on the Arctic. APR serves a local, national, and international research community with 150,000 monograph and serial volumes; 11,000 rare books and maps; approximately 15,000 linear feet of archives and manuscripts; more than 1,000,000 photographs, approx. 1 million feet of historical moving image footage, and over 10,000 hours of oral history recordings. The department consists of ten units and special projects: archives and manuscripts, oral history (including the Jukebox project), Alaskana and rare books, the Alaska Film Archives, the Alaska & Polar Periodical Index, Alaska's Digital Archives, the digital photo lab, micrographics, the ANSCA project, and the Rasmuson Translation Series project staffed by 28.25 FTE, including 4 faculty members.

Founded in 1917, UAF is a land-sea-space grant institution and the flagship campus of the University of Alaska system. The on-campus population of approximately 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students includes a high percentage of Alaska Native, Native American, and international students along with a wide variety of other ethnic backgrounds, and a substantial number of non-traditional students, making UAF a richly diverse academic setting. UAF is also home to award-winning affiliates of the Public Broadcasting System and National Public Radio, and the Museum of the North natural history, cultural, and fine arts museum.
