Research & Instruction Department Head

Loyola Marymount University seeks an exceptional candidate for the position of Research & Instruction Department Head.

Loyola Marymount, founded in 1911, is a comprehensive university in the mainstream of American Catholic higher education. The Research & Instruction Department Head will lead 5.5 FTE librarians and staff in providing reference, instruction and research services.

Other position specific accountabilities are as follows: Develop and implement reference service goals, policies and procedures. Partnering with teaching faculty, design, implement, market and assess instructional programs supporting research skills and information literacy. Promote curriculum-imbedded library instruction. Identify and recommend emerging technologies to incorporate best practices in reference and instruction. Provide in-person, chat, and consortial-based virtual reference services. Actively participate in llibrary-wide initiatives and campus outreach, coordinating the library’s role in faculty and student orientations and special user events. In coordination with the Head of Collection Development, continuously develop and assess the print and electronic collections of reference resources. Set goals, evaluate, and coach performance for reference librarians, and guide their promotion process. Serve on the library’s Management Council.

The ideal candidate must have broad knowledge of current trends in higher education, academic libraries, reference, and instructional technology. The successful candidate will be innovative, flexible, and collaborative. A Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited institution is required. A minimum of five years of progressively responsible library reference and/or instruction experience which includes supervision required.

Hiring Salary: $59,880 to $73,188 commensurate with experience and salary history.

The position will be available on December 1, 2008. Deliberations on the pool of candidates will begin as applications are received.
