Reference/Instruction Librarian (Renewable)

American University Library invites applications for a renewable contract, non-tenure-track Reference/Instruction Librarian position at the rank of Assistant Librarian. This position begins in January 2008 and is renewable for up to five years.

Responsibilities: Seeking an innovative, energetic and service-oriented librarian to work in the Division of Research, Teaching and Learning. Join a committed team of reference library faculty in providing service to a diverse user population at a busy reference desk, over the Web and in the classroom. Provide research assistance in the use of the online catalog, databases, and other Web-based and print resources. Teach in the library instruction program, including general and subject specific classes, walk-in workshops, and follow-up personal appointments. Contribute to collection development and work on special projects as needed. Some evening and weekend hours required.

Requirements: ALA accredited M.L.S.; library experience in print and electronic library instruction. A strong commitment to teaching and library outreach. Evidence of potential for scholarship and ongoing professional development. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills. Strong public service ethic; collaborative skills. Preferred: Experience with library instruction, including building digital learning objects, collection development, digital reference through instant messaging and email and working as part of a team.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
