The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley seeks an enthusiastic and collaborative professional librarian skilled in both collection-level and item-level cataloging to serve as Manuscripts Cataloger. This is a full-time, career-track appointment.


Under the general direction of the Principal Cataloger, the incumbent serves as primary original cataloger of manuscripts and archival collections for The Bancroft Library and has direct responsibility for the creation and maintenance of all MARC 21 catalog records for manuscripts and archival collections, both at the item and collection levels. A member of the Cataloging Unit, the incumbent collaborates closely with all other units in the Bancroft Technical Services Department, especially Archival Processing and Acquisitions. The incumbent provides technical processing (accessioning, preservation, arrangement, and description) and serves as the library’s expert on descriptive standards for manuscripts and archival materials. The incumbent provides reference and instructional services to library users. The incumbent develops cataloging initiatives and standards related to manuscripts and collaborates with library and other Berkeley colleagues in cataloging projects, serving as the de facto campus-wide manuscripts cataloging expert, routinely consulting with other library units on the cataloging and processing of manuscript materials. The incumbent assists in the preparation of grant proposals and reports and participates in library-wide initiatives, task forces, and committees.


Work experience using national standards for archival description, such as Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS), Archives, Personal Papers, and Manuscripts (APPM), and Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd Edition (AACR2), is a requirement of the position. The successful candidate will have demonstrated skills in original cataloging of a wide variety of manuscripts, knowledge of arrangement and description of archival materials, excellent written and oral communication skills, strong project management skills, and demonstrated proficiency at meeting goals and deadlines.


-Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution, OR equivalent degree, with a specialization in archival studies.
-Minimum 1-2 years experience working with modern manuscripts with an emphasis on cataloging and processing.
-Demonstrated understanding of the principles of cataloging, arrangement, and description of manuscript and archival collections.
-Experience providing original MARC 21 cataloging of books and manuscripts using ACR2, LCSH, LC classification, DACS and/or APPM.
-Knowledge and experience with MARC data elements.
-Experience with automated databases, especially OCLC Connexion.
-Excellent written and oral communication skills.
-Excellent organizational, time, and project management skills.


-Reference experience in an archives or manuscripts repository.
-Undergraduate degree in history (especially US or Western US history).
-Reading-level knowledge of a Western European language, preferably Spanish.
-Familiarity with Encoded Archival Description.
-Knowledge of conservation needs of paper-based documents.
