Humanities Librarian - Lecturer

The Queens College Libraries seek a Humanities Librarian with an understanding of the broad range of the humanities to participate in reference, instruction, liaison, and collection development responsibilities. The successful candidate will be user-centered and possess the ability to think critically in analyzing problems and developing resourceful solutions, and will be expected to work collegially with students, faculty, and colleagues in a highly interactive and fast-changing team environment. Responsibilities fall into two general areas:

• Reference work will include traditional and virtual reference and in-depth assistance by appointment. Scheduled reference service involves shared evening and weekend hours. The Humanities Librarian will be a member of the Instruction Team, providing library strategy and skills lectures and workshops to classes in any of the broad range of humanities. Instructional duties include the development of tutorials and online instruction, where appropriate.

• The Humanities Librarian also will be the primary liaison to humanities programs—English and American Literature; Drama, Theatre & Dance; and Comparative Literature—depending upon library needs and the strengths of the successful applicant. The Humanities Librarian will actively participate in initiatives to improve the Library's collections and its management of Web resources, as well as to energize its programs and outreach efforts in the humanities.

An MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program is required, with a bachelor’s degree in a relevant humanities subject area, plus experience in providing reference and instruction in an academic library, including knowledge of and experience with library research databases. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills are essential. Prefer an additional master’s degree, in a relevant humanities subject area. Experience with Web site management, Web authoring tools (e.g., Dreamweaver), and graphic design tools (e.g., Photoshop) highly desirable.

Salary: $36,595–$60,122; excellent benefits. Send cover letter and resume, with names and contact information for three references by 3/31/08 to:
