Exhibits and Outreach Librarian

The University Library of the University of Michigan invites applications and nominations for the new position of Exhibits and Outreach Librarian. This position offers the successful candidate an opportunity to develop, manage and present an innovative exhibit and events program designed to enrich the intellectual, educational, and cultural life of the University of Michigan campus and larger community. A newly created library gallery located at the heart of the central campus in the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library provides an exciting venue for displaying Library special collections and rich treasures, hosting lectures, presentations, and traveling exhibits, and collaborating with campus and community partners.

With a broad research collection of nearly 8 million volumes, the University Library also has a Special Collections Library internationally known for its collections of early manuscripts, social protest and radical literature, transportation history, and book arts, a renowned Map Library, and the largest collection of papyrus in the United States. The University of Michigan Library is well known for leadership in library services, including the recently launched Michigan Digitization Program (http://www.lib.umich.edu/mdp/), creating an unparalleled opportunity for the creation of new services to support the teaching, learning, and research mission of the University.

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Public Services, the librarian will join a dynamic, collegial staff and will work in a collaborative and supportive environment. The successful candidate is expected to combine an ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in a related field with significant relevant professional experience in exhibit and program planning; outstanding interpersonal and presentation skills including demonstrated ability to represent the Library's rich collections and programs to the campus and wider community; excellent organizational skills; experience creating web-based exhibits; the ability to work effectively as part of a team in a collaborative environment accompanied by initiative, self-direction and a commitment to innovation, creativity, and excellence.

Final rank and salary are dependent on qualifications and experience. As a professional appointment in the UM Library, this position offers opportunities for professional development and travel, and participates in faculty governance.
