Head, Electronic Resources Devlopment

The University of Michigan, University Library, seeks a Head of the Electronic Resources Development Unit to manage, coordinate and support the cataloging, acquisition, processing, and maintenance of electronic resources. This unit was recently created as part of the re-organization of Technical Services to apply focused attention to the special and growing needs of electronic resource handling. The subunits with a staff of 19.5 FTE include: Electronic Cataloging, Electronic Acquisitions and Licensing, and Electronic Access. This position will report to the Head of Technical Services.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE HEAD OF THE ELECTRONIC RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT UNIT
Develop policies and procedures, analyze, and facilitate workflow and communication among the three recently created electronic resource units. Collaborate with staff in Public Services, Collection Development and Scholarly Communication, and Library Information Technology in the management of electronic resources. (35%)
Manage and shape discussions about the integration of access to the Library's electronic resources, including the creation of metadata for the Institutional Repository, article level databases, open URL resolver, URL maintenance, rights management high level browse, and high level subject category management. (35%)
Oversee implementation of the electronic resources management system (Verde). Work with the Electronic Resources Officer and electronic resources teams to coordinate the selection and processing of electronic resources and to ensure continued availability of resources. Monitor trends in emerging technologies and developments in electronic products and services. (30%)

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED: ALA accredited Masters Degree in Library or Information Science; three (3) to five (5) years of experience in a large academic library with increasing levels of responsibility and demonstrated leadership skills including supervisory experience; demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience in the management of electronic resources in a library setting; experience with electronic materials; knowledge of electronic services and licenses, bibliographic records, library automation, and web environments; knowledge of contemporary practices, issues, and trends for managing electronic resources, including open URL access, federated search tools, and Electronic Resource Management systems; e-cataloging standards; vendor supplied bibliographic records; non-MARC metadata; demonstrated analytical skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work collaboratively in a complex, culturally diverse organizational setting.
DESIRED: Conversant with basic techniques for local digitization and management of information resources, including the methods for maintaining an institutional repository; experience in change management and demonstrated success in developing new units and functions; experience working with consortia on electronic resource licensing agreements

RANK, SALARY, AND LEAVE:
Rank is anticipated at Associate or Sr. Associate Librarian. Final rank and salary are dependent on qualifications and experience. Professional positions receive 24 days of vacation a year & 15 days of sick leave a year with provisions for extended benefits as well as opportunities for professional development and travel.
