Director of University Library

Millersville University of Pennsylvania seeks applications for the position of Director of the University Library. We seek a dynamic and creative leader in library services who has excellent interpersonal and team building skills to move the University Library into a learning center model that will promote the liberal arts tradition; foster collaborations and creation of knowledge within the University community; and facilitate a culture of flexibility and innovation. The Director is expected to participate in the execution of the University Library building campaign.

The University Library maintains over half a million volumes in book collection, and provides access to over 10,000 periodical titles, and has an overall budget of $3 million. There are 12 faculty librarians, 11 library staff, and 85 student assistants. Library faculty members enjoy full faculty status. The Library serves as a federal depository library and maintains significant special collections, particularly in education/curriculum and Pennsylvania history. The Library manages access to collections primarily through the Ex Libris' Voyager System.

RESPONSIBLITIES: The Director of the University Library is the Chief Administrative Officer of the University Library, serves as a member of the Deans' Council and reports to the Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs. The Director leads the development and implementation of a shared vision of the Library in support of the University's mission in teaching, scholarship, service, and campus/community engagement. The Director works with the Library faculty in strategic planning, integration of appropriate technology, policy development, collection development and consortial collaboration. Additionally, the Director collaborates in resource allocation, advancement and development activities; and serves as an advocate for the Library. The Director works within a collaborative system of shared governance while representing the Library to internal and external stakeholders. The Director evaluates Library faculty for reappointment and promotion and supervises support staff in accordance with collective bargaining agreements. The Director works with the University Commencement Committee to coordinate fall and spring University commencement activities. The Director performs any additional duties as assigned by the Provost.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited program plus a second master's degree; evidence of successful management and leadership within a college or university library; demonstrated ability to lead new initiatives consonant with the liberal arts tradition at Millersville; strong communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrated effective budgetary experience; demonstrated ability to lead, evaluate and supervise faculty and staff; demonstrated previous experience with strategic planning, facilities management and accreditation and outcomes assessment; evidence of leadership in collaborative activities; knowledge of emerging trends and issues in college and university libraries and related instructional/information technologies; demonstrated record of scholarly accomplishments and commitment to professional development; evidence of commitment to diverse populations who utilize library resources; capacity to participate in advancement/development activities; successful on-campus interview and public presentation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Earned doctorate; experience in transforming an academic library around a learning center model; experience with campus and community cultural programming; experience in project planning and management; leadership in consortial collaboration; experience and accomplishments in development of major gifts; and experience in developing grant proposals.
